Sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in Mexico grew 68.8% in October 2021 compared to October 2020 figures. Sales of electric vehicles, including cars and bicycles, are growing rapidly thanks to a growing interest in minimizing the use of fossil fuels by environmentally conscious consumers.
Many occupations are at risk of damage and injury when working with electric cars. According to the World Labor Organization (ILO), every 15 seconds, a worker dies as a result of a work-related accident or disease in the world. In the case of car factories, figures show that the number of accidents and illnesses per worker is 3.9% higher than in other sectors.
When using energy storage systems such as lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, electric cars present a number of safety risks, as they are highly prone to explosions caused by overheating or the use of incorrect voltages. Workers in this industry are exposed to these hazards, requiring the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) designed to function against electrical, chemical and thermal hazards.
As demand continues to grow in the sector, increased production will require a larger pool of people to rely on innovative PPE, including clothing and hand protection, to protect them from the hazards encountered in electric vehicle factories.
