Personal Protective Equipment in the mining industry

Outdoor mining PPE contributes to the safety and health of workers. In this sector of activity, mining gloves play an essential role, as there is constant exposure to cuts, punctures, abrasions and impact risks in the different processes of the industry.

Protective clothing for mining

This industry includes a multitude of processes with varying health risks. Therefore, education and training in occupational safety is essential. Along the same lines is the standardization in the use of protective clothing for mining. Workers must internalize and respect their use, while companies must ensure that the necessary garments are available.

Among the main parts of personal protective equipment for outdoor mining are mining gloves and mining suits.

Mining suits

Safety suits for outdoor mining work have a protective function in the processes involved in this industry. These include the following:

  • Construction of infrastructure.
  • Extraction and exploration.
  • Crushed.
  • Washing and preparation.
  • Transportation and logistics.
  • Service and maintenance.
  • Rescue and emergency response.

Thus, we can find suits of protective equipment for mining activities such as the following:

  • AlphaTec® FLASH: Provides multi-layer chemical protection. It is reusable and flame retardant.
  • AlphaTec® 6500: Uses multilayer chemical barrier technology and offers Type 1 protection, which is gas tight.
  • AlphaTec® 2300 PLUS: It is a chemical barrier for medium-demanding jobs and its protection is type 3/4/5.

Thanks to them, a large number of tasks can be carried out in a safer and more comfortable way for operators.

Mining gloves

In the mining sector, hand protection ensures that the various tasks can be carried out in comfort and safety. There are a multitude of types that are designed for the different possible areas of activity.

Exploration

Its main applications are gripping oil-covered metal parts, handling large parts and placing drill rods. In this way, the user obtains protection against impacts, cuts and liquid substances.

Some quality models are:

  • RINGERS®  R270: Provide impact and cut protection with silicone dots on the palm.
  • AlphaTec® 58-735: They offer chemical protection and cut resistance.

Drilling

In this process, tasks similar to those of exploration are carried out. However, the ideal gloves must offer protection against impacts and cuts, in addition to facilitating contact with water.

Examples of quality gloves are:

  • ActivArmr® 27-805: They are three times more durable than the toughest leather gloves.
  • RINGERS® R297: Protect against impacts, cuts and abrasion.

Working with explosives

In this case, gloves are required for auger loading tasks.

Two products that fit perfectly in this area are:

  • HyFlex® 11-939: Provides cut resistance and oil repellency in a lightweight glove.
  • RINGERS® R259B: They are liquid and cut-proof.
  • AlphaTec® 58-735: They offer chemical protection and cut resistance.

Loading and unloading

Those who perform this work work in vehicles, usually from a cab. Therefore, your gloves require light protection. The following have features that meet these expectations:

  • HyFlex® 11-801: Ensures dexterity and breathability.
  • HyFlex® 11-840: With a similar line to the previous ones, they offer durability for prolonged wear in abrasive applications.

Maintenance

Workers in this process perform tasks such as cutting, changing and assembling metal components. They also replace hydraulic hoses, pipes and flanges with acidic or corrosive substances. Therefore, they need protective gloves against abrasion, cut, puncture, oil and impact. The following gloves meet these requirements:

  • HyFlex® 11-550: Protect from cuts and intermittent heat.
  • EDGE® 48-929: They have excellent grip and high oil and grease repellency.

These are the main processes carried out in the mining industry. However, there are others, such as:

  • Crushing.
  • Operators and drivers of loading equipment.
  • Leaching and flotation workers in process plants.
  • Laboratory workers.
  • Foundry operations, furnaces, cupels and muffles.
  • Environmental technicians.
  • Chemical emergency technicians.

At Ansell we provide solutions for all of them and we have a wide variety of models and brands. Our experience in the sector is one of our guarantees, in addition to the wide variety of products for different industries.
