What is the importance of double gloving?

Wearing two pairs of surgical gloves, as opposed to one pair, is considered to provide an added barrier, and further reduce the risk of cross-contamination. From a clinical perspective, double-gloving matters because:

  • Surgery poses an increased risk to blood-borne infections to HCWs if injured with a contaminated sharp1
  • Surgical gloves are recognized as effective barrier protection to minimize the risk of infections1
  • Gloves are prone to tears and perforations during use1
